Go for a walk and look for letters of the alphabet all around you! For example, two branches on the ground might form the letter T. The goal is to find the letters without having to move items around to create the letter. Mark off each letter as you find it!

Color is everywhere! Can you guess the color for each of these riddles?

Find each of the following colors on a walk around your neighborhood. What kind of interesting things do you see? Mark each color off as you find them, don't forget to look high and low!

This Summer, parents and guardians of budding storytellers ages 8-12 are invited to enter the Katherine Applegate Color Our World Writing Contest. Entries are open from June 1 – July 31, 2025.

Your writing can change and color our world!

Write a short story between 1,000 – 1,500 words about a character that takes an action that changes someone else’s day for the better. The action can be as small or grand as you’d like — even small acts can make a big difference! Your story must have a catchy title, a protagonist that takes an action to make a change, and a beginning, middle, and end.

This week we’ll meet creatures from fantasy and science fiction, including mermaids, aliens, and unicorns, plus dinos from the distant past. It’s a week of fantastic beasts! This is where you find them.

It's easy to get so preoccupied with our own lives that we forget about others, but with just one simple act of kindness, we can change the way someone else's day goes, and we can better ourselves and the world in the process. This challenge is designed for you to take the time to do something for someone else — and hopefully they will pay it forward to the next person!
